Top 10 Overrated Books

Sorry guys. While thinking of my favorites I couldn't help but think of
my least favorites. Disclaimer: These are not books I necessarily hate
(well, not all of them anyway)... I just think they're overrated. And
there's more than one that I never even finished. (So maybe my
credibility just plummeted? Oh well.)

1. Huckleberry Finn
2. Sister Carrie
3. The Giver
4. The Work and the Glory
5. Moby Dick
6. Tess of the D'urbervilles
7. The Great Gatsby
8. Jane Eyre
9. David Copperfield
10. Uncle Tom’s Cabin

What kind of blog is this? Blogs are supposed to mindless mental peanut butter. I refuse to read this blog again as long as Hawthorne appears anywhere on it. Please let me know when this kind of behavior has passed so that I can continue to read it.

I am so impressed. I want to be as smart as you! I was just glad to have read one book on the list, but since you have to read To Kill a Mockingbird in school, maybe it doesn't count? But, in my defense I loved it so much and our first dog's name was Atticus. I love to read, but don't have much time for it anymore so I'm always looking for easy reads- not ones I have to work at. Maybe I'll give a few of them a try. Any suggestions? Pride and Prejudice is one of my very favorite movies. :) Ok- not the same thing. :)

I hated The Giver too!! Oh my, did I actually read that? sorry, but that was a waste of time. I have to agree with you on most of them. I really liked the Great Gatsby though. I like the book lists.

will you please add Twilight to the list? A vampire love story? Come on.

...and yes, I'm a creepy stalker who found your blog. You can thank Laurel for that.

I LOVE this post Michelle-- seriously, in true College Times fashion, you've outdone yourself in wit, smarts, and cynicism. Well done you! And THANK YOU for putting W&G books on your list. I always have my students reading one of these.... Ugh.

I agree with some of your choices, but loved Jane Eyre. I read it while I was in high school and have re-read it since. I even own the Broadway soundtrack...can you believe they made a musical of Jane Eyre? Okay it lasted about three seconds. Moving on- I agree with your opinion of The Work and Glory books (a Mormon soap opera based on fact) and The Giver (it disturbed me way too much, and don't tell me it was supposed to!) Great post, kiddo!
Love, Mama
