kickin' off the season

Growing up, my family always took part in two sacred holiday rituals. (I realize these are not in order according to timeline, but bear with me.) Every Christmas Eve we read and act out the Nativity. I think it was cute when we were little... making my uncle Wade don donkey ears and crawl on all fours across the family room, with one of the little girls on his back. It's pretty funny actually - there came a point where there were too many cousins for all the "roles", so our parents made up extra animals and characters so that everyone could be in costume. I'm pretty sure someone was a frog one year. SO NOT KIDDING! The other, equally sentimental, tradition is that every Thanksgiving after we've gorged ourselves on "second dinner" (you know, the meal a couple hours after the meal), we watch White Christmas.

Anyway... since I've been married, I've had to tweak the latter tradition a bit. Since my kind, loving husband refuses to watch any movie filmed prior to 1980, and I don't want to spend Thanksgiving night alone in my living room, I've started watching White Christmas the day after Thanksgiving instead. And surprisingly, this new arrangement works out perfectly! I get to hum along to such tunes as "Sisters" and "Mandy" while performing my favorite task in the world... Christmas decorating! Which, since I splurged and bought a fake PRE-LIT tree this year, is actually a fun activity!

So folks, White Christmas has been screened, the tree is lit, Nat King Cole is in the CD player, and the Christmas season has officially begun!

Our family has the same traditions. Isn't White Christmas the best? Don't worry we still act out the manger scene and dress up in funny costumes. I loved reading about your top ten book choices.

I'm going to admit that I actually have never seen "White Christmas" but you have inspired me! Thank goodness for Nat King Cole at Christmas- that is my family tradition: always decorating the tree and house to his Christmas record (and later CD) :). Yeah for the Christmas season!!

Hurray! i love it- I still remember "Angel Matt" at McConkies one year. What a cute little boy- was it really that long ago? Of course this was followed by a round of not-so-white elephant game. ahhh, love those Lees!

Those are the best traditions! The Lees really are the best. I think that my little brother Jonny likes to sing Bing's rendition all year long. But come on Bing, it doesn't get any better then that! I love your Christmas music! All of those songs are all my favs. So glad it is the season.

Hooray for Christmas! I still have YET to watch White Christmas this year... Jason and I had to compromise with our Thanksgiving day movie choice, and watched Elf, a decent alternative! It's hilarious! Anyway, I love your new tree and online ode to Christmas!

I actually got Blaine to watch it with me two years in a row! I'm hoping he'll let me carry this tradition on forever. It's just too good.
What's really scary is how ingrained the movie is for me. I know it by heart.

And Becca is lying. I made her watch it with me in high school once.

what the crap! I am missing out on a Lee tradition...why hasn't Scott carried this one on...I haven't even ever seen White Christmas--don't tell your mom--I'll be disowned! But since I had never seen it, I saw it was on the other night and so I tivo-ed it and now I am so excited to watch it! I love your tree and way to go with getting out your stuff right after Thanksgiving!

Ten cheers for tradition! We watched White Christmas on Thanksgiving day, and then I waited till Monday (after Alicia, Blaine, and Brett left) to start decorating. The family room tree is a nightmare to decorate, but I watched Elf, Pride and Prejudice, and The Count of Monte Cristo while doing so. The house looks great, if a little empty, but don't worry...all your "shoe" stockings are still hung at the fireplace. Love, Mom
