apostrophes: the bane of my existence

There is absolutely no way to say this without sounding like a huge, obsessive, English nerd, JERK…. But I’m sorry. I can’t help it. If I get one more Christmas present/card/letter/friendly hallow addressed to “THE WALKER’S” there is going to be Hell to pay.

“The Walker’s” (with an apostrophe) shows possession. So I ask, to whom/what are you addressing said gift….The Walker’s what? The Walker’s mailbox? The Walker’s doorstep? The Walker’s Christmas tree? And who is this elusive (singular) Walker? Is it the Texas Ranger? Because if you’re intending to address something to both Brad and Michelle, you would need to put the apostrophe in the plural form so we’re both represented, i.e.: The Walkers’ …However, the question still arises: “The Walkers’ what?” We’re still dabbling in the confusing plural possessive apostrophe usage.

So please, next time you address a gift to “The Walkers,” “The Smiths,” or “The Joneses” (I know, it looks funny but it’s right), don’t misuse the apostrophe. In fact, don’t use him at all. He’s a small punctuation mark but he has feelings, and he doesn’t like to be thrown into places where he’s unwelcome.

I know that no one cares about this as much as I do. I’m guessing that no one even notices where apostrophes are placed on things as trivial as gift tags. I'm also guessing that some of you have hurt feelings; I promise, that was never my intention. And I’m sure that you’re all sick of my rant.

Love,
The Walkers

Okay-- you are my hero! Seriously, this apostrophe usage drives me crazy!!! It's like people saying Nordstroms. Hello--it's Norstrom. Nordstrom. It is neither plural nor possessive.
I read this blog-gem to my Euphony staff and they were giddy with elitist-ism. You are now their hero too. Nerdiness loves company.
michelle,
isabel and i were bored in the back seat of your mom's car, as laurel and deann were discussing the necessity of a separate cd case for christmas cds (plural, no apostrophe), when i heard you text laurel. she said she would be sure to check it later, but since i was bored i asked myself if i could check it on my phone. ten minutes later, i was at your blog, reading outloud and watching as your mom and sister are tearing up in the front seat. it was very funny. thanks for english lesson and for the excitement.
from the not so bored man in the back seat
ps i also asked myself if i could post a comment from my phone. the answer is yes but i choose not to capitalize when typing on my phone's keyboard (yes apostrophe...i had to use at least one).

Alright, I know that I did not use an apostrophe mailing your Christmas card. However, please do not read my blog any more. I am sure that my typing is not up to your standard. But you love me anyway right?!

I love it! Your post is laugh out loud funny (humm after using "LOL" so much, it felt funny to just type the words out). Oh the dangers of this techno-age, what will become of our written language?

Becca, you're freakin' hilarious. And Mindy, I remember being very happy that you addressed and signed your card correctly. That is so PATHETIC that I notice... I promise I don't pass judgment though!

Any gifts adressed to the Walker's can just be forwarded to the Hawkes', Hawkes's, Hawkeses, or Hawkes Home. We don't care what you call us when gifts are involved.
Now about the over used comma...

hysterical! I am laughing out loud here in the privacy with frank and bronx! That was damn funny and i love Karin's comment bout the comma...how bout the "..." that I overuse!!!! Or the lack of capitalization, etc. Or the run on sentences, or the sentences that start with "or" blah, blah, blah but dang I love you!

I have never agreed with a blog more. Just last year I had to abandon my massages at the Aveda salon in the good old University mall because they advertised that their gift cards were great for "holiday's and birthday's." So long, Aveda. I don't support improper grammar. Next topic on the menu: its vs. it's and their vs. there vs. they're.

Wow! I'm laughing out loud at the absurd use of apostrophes. I'm not an English major, but I guess I am a nerd. Perhaps those that "label" a gift "Walkers'" mean that the gift belongs to the Walkers. Of course that only applies to labeling, and can't help any of the poor souls that are actually "addressing" gifts "To: The Walkers." I hope grammar isn't the Grinch that steals your Christmas Spirit.

That was awesome Michelle! Zeb and I loved reading that post, especially Becca jo's comment. I was reading it at first and thought, "The poor girl has no idea she is butchering the post with what Michelle hates. Finally I got that it was a joke but boy did I feel sorry for her at first! :)
I loved Meggan's comment about the misuse of there, their, and they're. They are misused a LOT!!!! I love this post and can't wait to hear another grammer one. Why not address "we was" for all the people in SF and Payson? That one drives me up the wall!
I wonder how I have addressed my Christmas cards in the past! Hopefully they have been right but you can bet your bottom dollar they will be this year! ;) By the way, our cards will be out the first of January for the new year. I won't get them done in time for Christmas! Too much to do, too little time...story of my life!

I love it. Naturally, we all make mistakes now and then, but honestly, you can't fix them unless someone teaches you how. I'm sure that you still love the senders of those cards, etc., and that you'll send a few goodies back their way too. So, have a Merry Christmas, and (yipee!) we get to see you in a few days. Love, Mama Lee
Michelle, you are GREAT! I am always so entertained reading your blog and I love it! That is all I'm going to say because I am agonizing over the grammar in this post. But seriously, that was hilarious :) Love your cousins in AZ.

I know this is such a belated comment you MIGHT not notice it... So my favorite part about this is that you told me you were uber-stressing about misused apostrophes UNTIL you wrote this post, and you are now "okay" with the continued stream of grammar errors that come your way! You are my hero!
